1. Acceptance
By accessing or using PolitiData (the "Service") at www.politidata.ca, you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.
2. Service Description
PolitiData provides access to structured Canadian open data via a REST API. Data is sourced from federal and provincial government datasets published under open government licences.
3. Account and API Key
Access to the API requires a valid API key obtained through RapidAPI or directly via www.politidata.ca. You are responsible for keeping your key confidential and for all activity under your account.
4. Permitted Use
You may use the API to build applications, conduct research, and power internal or commercial data workflows, subject to your plan's rate limits. You may not:
- Resell or sublicense raw API responses as a competing data product
- Attempt to circumvent rate limits, scrape beyond your quota, or reverse-engineer the service
- Use the Service for any unlawful purpose
5. Plans, Billing, and Cancellation
Paid plans are billed monthly in advance via Stripe or RapidAPI. Subscriptions renew automatically until cancelled. Cancellations take effect at the end of the current billing period. No refunds are issued for partial months.
6. Data Accuracy
Data is sourced from government open data repositories and processed automatically. While we strive for accuracy, we make no warranties regarding completeness, timeliness, or fitness for a particular purpose. Always verify critical information against primary sources.
7. Intellectual Property and Data Sources
The PolitiData platform, API infrastructure, and derived data structures are owned by Nicolas Primeau. Underlying government datasets remain the property of their respective publishers and are subject to open government licences (OGL-Canada and applicable provincial equivalents).
PolitiData republishes Canadian open government data from: political contribution and financial-return data from Elections Canada; and lobbying registrations and monthly communication reports from the Office of the Commissioner of Lobbying of Canada. This service contains information licensed under the Open Government Licence - Canada. Some records include the names of individual contributors, registrants, and public office holders as published by these bodies under their respective transparency mandates. We are not affiliated with, and do not imply endorsement by, any of these government bodies.
8. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, PolitiData and its operator are not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the Service. Our total liability is limited to the amounts paid by you in the three months preceding the claim.
9. Modifications
We may update these Terms at any time. Continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance. Material changes will be communicated via email or a notice on the website.
10. Governing Law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada applicable therein. Any disputes shall be resolved in the courts of Ontario.
